Case1 : Higashishirakawa village in Gifu

Higashishirakawa village, nestled in the mountains of Gifu prefecture and only two hours' drive from Chubu International Airport, is well known as an area producing high quality lumber and tea. The vestiges of old-fashioned Japanese culture remain strong in the village, which has a population of over 2,200 people who still keep traditions such as regional dances and songs (Kabuki) alive today. The trees grown in the area are known as "Tono Cypruss," and they have been widely used for their high quality of wood since long ago. There are also many practitioners of Shinto in this village, and the area is prosperous as a producer of cedarwood household shrines.
